The following case study outlines a typical example of our involvement in an e-commerce project:
Our Part in the RBM Online Project
Online scientific article search and subscriber management database
Systems Support designed and developed an online database application
to enable Visitors and Subscribers to access information via a web site
developed for RBM. When any SEARCH button within the RBM Online web site
is clicked, the 4D database is accessed and the visitor is presented with
a request form to fill in and find whatever they are looking for (and
which they are allowed to see, of course!).
Visitors are able to access only a superficial level of journal information
but will be prompted to subscribe on-line if they seek access to more
substantial material. They can register and gain access immediately, if
desired – a verifying e-mail is sent directly to advise them of
their unique password for future enquiries on the site.
Fully-fledged Subscribers will be able to search scientific abstracts,
new articles and published journals, read any of the information on-line
and/or select an article or whole journal to download as a PDF file for
local reading and printing. Searches can be carried out quickly and easily
on the site, for example, recent articles by author X, and/or containing
A, B and C keywords, perhaps for forthcoming journal issues only.
Articles/issues can be purchased individually on a pay-per-view basis,
linking directly with online credit card transaction-handlers such as
WorldPay and NetBanx.
Features added to the database since the original installation include
the addition of content-sensitive advertising, facilities to help with
streamlining the process of receiving submissions from authors and tracking
peer reviews, and a ‘hits’ analysis module.
Fiona Bennett, executive editor of RBM Online, said “Systems Support
have obviously gone to great lengths to make it seem simple even to those
of us who may be a little less adept at web and computer 'things'”. |
